The History of the 41st

Where it all began
The original 41st Virginia began as the "Cockade Cadets," a pre-war militia unit in Petersburg, Virginia, so most of them were middle-class city boys.  After admission to the Army of Northern Virginia in 1861, with more than 100 men in Co. E, the 41st fought as a part of Mahone's brigade in 22 major engagements.

Brigadier General William Mahone

Many were lost
These engagements included Malvern Hill, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Petersburg (The Crater was our moment of glory!), Sailor's Creek, and Appomattox, where Co. E surrendered with a dozen men left.
